Social History — C. 1755-1781
Plate
A plain, narrow rimmed plate with a shallow well and flat base outlined with an incised circle. There is an ownership triad of ‘E’ over ‘J’ and ‘T’ on the back. Also on the back are a set of hallmarks including the initials ‘RB’, a crowned ‘X’, a ‘LONDON’ label and the square touch depicting a statant griffin with inscribed labels ‘ROBERT’ and ‘BUSH’ above and below, by Robert Bush of Bristol, OP737. Bush was active from c.1755 to 1781 and an advertisement in Felix Farley’s Journal for July and August 1765, suggests that he was working in conjunction with Joseph Spackman of Cornhill London. This plate is one of a pair with 51.60/3.
