Chemise
This underwear was given to the donor's mother, Alice Seelig, née Herz, when she went to university to study medicine. It was among the few items Alice and her brother and sister brought to Britain when they fled Nazi Germany in April 1939. The 'AH' monogram on the cehmise stands for Alice Hertz.
The family's possessions were shipped to Hamburg but were embargoed. The family arrived in London with one trunk containing everyday essentials; goods to sell, such as fur coats and a microscope; a few photographs and a prayer book.
