Sculpture, carved block
This block of stone from the London Arch monument is carved on two adjacent faces.
on one side there is a pilaster containing imbricated leaf decoration to the right, and a cyma reversa moulding framing a panel carved with an inhabited vine-scroll to the left. 5-fingered leaves stem from a meandering branch, and a bunch of grapes in the bottom right hand corner is inspceted by a dove-like bird which faces right.
The other face has a pilaster containing acanthus spray decoration to the left of the shoulder of a figure set in a recess. He has been identified as Hercules, with the block therefore related to those number 80.325/15a and 80.325/15b that show the god's torso and arm.
Carved from oolitic limestone, it was found with other similar stones, reused as building material in the Roman riverside wall.
