Printed Ephemera — 1840-1849
Card, valentine card
Comic valentine's card printed as a woodcut on cheap paper with a caricature of two women talking over tea. The print is crudely coloured and below is printed a verse, 'Thou vile old harridan, behold, Thy sneaking visage base and bold, With Bellman's loud and slippery tongue, I'd have such mischief-makers hung. Go, vanish with thy snake like hiss, We scorn a gossip, Magpie Miss; Every vice thy face revealing, Lying, slandering, picking, stealing.' One of a collection of sample comic valentines bound in a single volume, stored within a wooden case.On the spine of the case is a label 'Comic'.
