Printed Ephemera — 1851-1860
Card, valentine card
Comic valentine's card printed as a woodcut on cheap paper with a caricature of a 'Shaver.' The print is crudely coloured and below is printed a verse 'You say that Love's arrow has made your heart bleed Your rasor perhaps did the barbarous deed, You think your coarse grin is a soft winning smile, And your cutting your customer's lips the while, You have sent me a front of ringlets fair, But, my Fancy Barber I wear my own hair, You may cut people's lips but you shall not kiss mine I'll not have a Shaver for my Valentine.' One of a collection of sample comic valentines bound in a single volume, stored within a wooden case. On the spine of the case is a label 'Comic'. One of a series of valentine's cards relating to various trades.
