Printed Ephemera — 1840-1849
Card, valentine card
Comic valentine's card printed as a woodcut on cheap paper with a caricature of a fruit vendor. The print is crudely coloured and below is printed a verse 'Oh pumpkin headed, and seedy fellow, Your skin like a wither'd pear is yellow, Your eyes like gooseberrys--sour and green-- Sure such a monster was never seen. Like a wild crab--you filthily grow-- With your teeth like thicket hedge in a row; Make as you may--I shall never incline, To be such a spoony's Valentine.' One of a collection of sample comic valentine's bound in a single volume, stored within a wooden case. On the spine of the case is a label 'Comic'. One of a series of valentine's cards relating to various trades.
