Printed Ephemera — 1851-1860
Card, valentine card
Comic valentine's card printed as a woodcut on cheap paper with a caricature of a 'compositor' wearing an apron. The print is crudely coloured and below is printed a cruel verse 'Lor a Compositor, your skull is rather thick, You seem composed to sleep, with your composin stick, Rather than with galleys, you'd be among bad girls And at the House of call swill with your drunken pals, The cases you know best, are those before the beak, When through drink you can scarcely speak, Go and set in Long Primer yourself up an ASS. I see your the ugliest and worst type in your class.' One of a collection of sample comic valentine's bound in a single volume, stored within a wooden case. On the spine of the case is a label 'Comic'. One of a series of valentine's cards relating to various trades.
