Printed Ephemera — 1850-1869
Card, valentine card
Comic valentine's card printed as a woodcut on cheap paper with a caricature of a man dressed in rags, entering a pawnbroker's shop signed 'UNCLE,' the popular name for a pawnbroker. The print is crudely coloured and below is printed a cruel verse 'Poor Ragged Half-starved Wretch to your Uncle go, Until your Drunken Lazy tricks lay your Children low! Who would think that once you'd been kindly cared for, comely seen 'Til Demon drink caused you to roam, an outcast from your home! Go, "Take the Pledge" to Sober ways incline, And then some good will come of this my Valentine!' One of a collection of sample comic valentine's bound in a single volume, stored within a wooden case. On the spine of the case is a label 'Comic'.
