Printed Ephemera — 1840-1860
Card, valentine card
Comic valentine's card printed as a woodcut on cheap paper with a caricature of a maid holding a large key in one hand and a jug in the other. The print is crudely coloured and below is printed a cruel verse 'Sall Slather, Sall Slather, come tie up you shoes, Don't chatter so long with your gabbling news; How Master told Missus, and Missus told you - Parish bred wench, with you have nothing to do. go, mind your own business, backbiting cat, You're at best but a bad one, I tell you right pat; Mend the holes in your stockings, so dirty and queer, Mend your manners, and keep your Nose out of the Beer'. One of a collection of sample comic valentine's bound in a single volume, stored within a wooden case.
