The Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution for Aged Freemasons and Widows of Freemasons was founded in 1842 as the Institution for Aged & Decrepit Freemasons and in 1850 the first Home was opened in Addiscombe Road, Croydon. It was the sole residence for over 100 years and known as the Asylum for Worthy, Aged and Decayed Freemasons. In 1955, the Home was transferred to Harewood Court at Hove in Sussex. Email from Croydon Council 28/7/06: "The Freemasons Asylum, in what is now Freemasons Road, was opened in 1850. Theres a picture and short article in the Illustrated London News (3 Aug 1850). It says it was from the design of Mr. S.W. Danks. As you say, the residents moved out in 1955, and since then it has been used as offices by various organisations, such as Help the Aged. It has had several names in its time, but is often referred to as Davidson Lodge."
S.W. Daukes was the Architect.
