Kings Cross
King's Cross. This monument in the former village of Battle Bridge at the junction of Euston, Pentonville, St Pancras and Gray's Inn Roads was erected in 1836 with a statue of George IV on top. The base was used as a police station and then as a pub. The statue was removed in 1842 and the whole building demolished in 1845, but it gave its name to the station built in 1851-2 on the site of a former smallpox hospital, closed about 1846 and moved to become the Whittington Hospital at that time.
