Paintings, Prints & Drawings — 1840-1850
The Falcon Glassworks
This is an engraving of the virtually same scene as shown in 95.279/1, q.v., an oil painting itself described as "British School, 19th century". It may be a unlettered proof or alternative version of 2014.45/333, an illustration to Brayley's History of Surrey (1841-1848).
The print shows the interior of the Falcon glassworks, with workers blowing glass around a central furnace. The Falcon Glassworks was established in 1693 at the southern end of Blackfriars Bridge and Apsley Pellatt IV (1791-1863), one of the chief innovators of the mid-19th century British glass industry, worked there.
