Clemence Paine and an elderly resident in the kitchen of her Stepney home
An elderly woman talking to a probation officer in the kitchen of her home in Stepney, 1934. The probation officer was a friend of the photographer, Humphrey Spender, and had invited him to take photographs of the living conditions of poor East End children. Spender, an architectural student at the time, was interested in the idea that many of the social problems in poor urban areas were due to sub-standard housing.
