Printed Ephemera — 1836-1845
Mr Cobham as Wallace the Hero of Scotland
Handcoloured theatrical souvenir plate engraved with a portrait of the actor Mr Cobham in the role of Wallace, the hero of Scotland. The portrait is embellished with metal foil tinsel ornaments representing the armour and weapons. The shawl is of woven cotton tartan decorated with metal foil studs. Such portraits would have been sold for 1d plain as theatrical souvenirs for colouring and tinselling at home. Costumes like this were popular subjects for tinsel prints, because of the scope for tinselling the metallic armour and weapons detailing.
