Printed Ephemera — 1908
Handkerchief
Paper handkerchief commemorating the first Roman Catholic congress to be held in a Protestant country since the Reformation, and the first visit of a Papal Legate to London since pre-Reformation, in September 1908. The handkerchief is made of crepe paper and has a decorative border of coloured flags with a portrait of the Pope's Legate, Cardinal Vincent Vannutelli, Bishop of Palestrina in Italy. Other churchmen from all over the world attended. The main event was a procession to Westminster Cathedral. According to the handkerchief, printed to be sold at the event, up to 50,000 Catholics were expected to attend, including members of the English aristocracy.
