Printed Ephemera — C. 1900-1925
Metropolitan Borough of Stepney, Bath Department
Blue and grey printed ticket issued by the Metropolitan Borough of Stepney. It refers to the purchase of a 1d soap tablet, by someone using the bathing facilities of the Stepney municipal bath and wash house. By the end of the 19th century all London boroughs were obliged to provide public wash, bathhouses and laundries for their local residents. Regular washing was encouraged to prevent disease and instil cleanliness of habit. Those wishing to take a hot bath or shower paid a small entrance fee of up to 6d. Clean towels were provided but soap had to be bought separately.
