Indenture, contract
An Indenture or contract issued by Richard Akerman, the Keeper of Newgate Prison, to Charles Douglas Bowden, Deputy Marshall of the Admiralty Court, for the delivery of Thomas Smith (alias Harding), and Robert Main for execution at Execution Dock, Wapping, following their conviction for piracy, in 1762.
Smith and his colleagues had been sailors on board the Bristol privateer 'King George'. After seizing a cargo of wine from an enemy merchantman, the sailors had taken control of the 'King George' and, confining the officers in the cabin, had turned pirate and determined to sail to the East Indies. However, they were tricked into sailing to Spain, where they abandoned their plan and fled in the ship's boats.

Charles Bowden, in addition to being an Admiralty marshall, was also a pumpmaker by profession, and in 1765 he invented a highly successful ship's pump which was trialled by the Navy Board on a ship at Deptford.
