Playbill
Double column playbill for Astley's Royal Amphitheatre, 29 March 1852. Announcing performance of 'Tancred, or the Triumph of the Crusaders', the farce 'Lottery Ticket' and a ballet.
Astley's was south of the Thames, and had established a reputation for its spectacular equestrian melodramas. By the time this playbill was made in 1852 Astley's circus still boasted "an amount of equestrian talent Never before witnessed in Europe". Astley's had been home to Andrew Ducrow's remarkable horsemanship, and this tradition continued after Ducrow's death.
