Opening Ceremony of the Blackwall Tunnel
Souvenir card produced to commemorate the opening of the Blackwall Tunnel by the Prince and Princess of Wales on May 22nd 1897. The card is printed with roundel portraits of the Queen and Prince and Princess of Wales and illustrations of the tunnel entrance, air engine, section across the thames and shaft No.2. The lettering and border decoration is printed in gold. On the reverse is printed a description of the tunnel, and below is printed the heading 'This souvenir is presented by A.G. Horsey, Gentleman's Hatter, Hosier, and Bookmaker, 159-161 East India Dock Road, Poplar, and 16 Bank Buildings, Ilford'. This souvenir was presented to potential customers by the outfitters that was located close to the tunnel entrance to promote business.
