Souvenir in Loving Memory of Queen Alexandra our beloved Queen Mother who passed away at Sandringham Friday, 20th November 1925
Souvenir paper table napkin commemorating the death of Queen Alexandra on 20th November 1925. In the centre is a woodcut portrait of the Queen with the caption 'Not dead, but sleeping'. Below in letterppress is printed a poem commemorating the Queen. The napkin has a border decoration of purple, white and green flowers and a scalloped edge.
Similar souvenir napkins were printed for every popular and significant public event, ceremony or procession that occured in London from the late 19th century to mid 20th century. The squares were imported into London from Japan pre-printed with a decorative border in up to 5 colours and a blank central area. Burgess was one of the main printer of such napkins that would be sold for one penny (1d) primarily by street traders.
