Printed Ephemera — 1919
The Inspection of the Indian Troops by their Emperor King
Souvenir paper table napkin commemorating the parade of a contingent of the Indian Army and their inspection by George V at Buckingham Palace on 2 August 1919. The Japanese crepe paper is printed with woodcut portraits of George V and Queen Mary and details of the route of the march, with a decorative border of pink roses. This was a triumphal procession of Indian troops who had fought for Britain during World War I. King George is referred to as 'Their Emperor King', referring to his designation as 'Emperor of India'. This official title was inherited from his grandmother Queen Victoria, and was retained by British monarchs until George VI and his wife Queen Elizabeth relinquished it in 1948 after India had gained independence.
