Printed Ephemera — 1841-1860
Hackney Carriage, 12716
Hackney carriage licence number 12716, issued to Joseph William Prateley a resident of Camberwell. Hackney carriages were regulated by a licensing system and cab drivers were required to display their licence in their cab in case of complaints against the driver or the state of his cab. Unlicensed cabmen often tried to get around the rules by borrowing cabs and licences from legally licensed cabmen. Such 'casuals' were often drawn from a range of backgrounds and included ''broken-down gentlemen', ex-policemen, pickpockets and unemployed tradesmen'.
