Printed Ephemera — 1837
Playbill
Playbill for Astley's Royal Amphitheatre, most likely relating to the week of 12th September 1837. Announcing performance of 'The Renegade or The Siege of Alcazar and Struggles of the Moors' and other equestrian entertainments.
Astley's was south of the Thames, and had established a reputation for its spectacular equestrian performances. Andrew Ducrow was an innovative and impressive horseman, who developed remarkable equestrian acts. He ran Astley's until it was destroyed by fire for a third time in 1841. After the fire in 1841 William Batty acquired Astley's from Ducrow. Ducrow died early in 1842 after suffering a mental breakdown.
