Backplate
Pikeman’s backplate, made of steel, with leather straps to attach it to a breastplate. Companies of Pikemen armed with pikes (large spears on 3 metre poles) were employed to defend the infantry musketeers from cavalry charges. The military manuals required pikemen to wear armour as they were front-line targets.
