A sermon preach'd in the morning at St Dunstan's in the West : and in the afternoon (with some variations) at Newgate, on the second day of September, 1707
This sermon was preached by Paul Lorrain at St Dunstan's in the West on 2 September 1707 to commemorate the anniversary of the Great Fire of London. He read it again in the afternoon (with some variations) at Newgate. The anniversary of the fire was observed every year until 1859 when Parliament ordered the commemorations to cease.
In his sermon Lorrain describes the fire as God's judgement for the nation's sins and gives similar Biblical examples of God's punishments. He deplores the continuing sinfulness of Londoners saying 'they have refused to receive thy correction; They have made their Faces harder than a Rock.' He says that unless people mend their ways, further disasters will happen. Lorrain urges people to repent their sins and perform acts of charity for their neighbours in gratitude for God's mercy.
