Library — 1666-10
Manuscript
These four pages, written by a clerk, set out the decisions taken at conferences of Committee of Privy Council and Committee of Common Council on 18 October and 22 October 1666 after the Great Fire of London. It lists various plans for the rebuilding programme such as:
- The clearance of rubble from the burnt area
- A survey of the burnt area
- That landowners should pay 6 pence for their foundations to be surveyed prior to rebuilding
- Street widening schemes
Lord Clarendon himself has scribbled some notes at the bottom of page four. Edward Hyde, the first Earl of Clarendon (1609-1674) was the Lord Chancellor at the time of the Great Fire and a close political advisor to Charles II. The notes are about the rebuilding, though the handwriting is hard to read.
