Printed Ephemera — 1810-1838
Card, valentine card
Handfinished Valentine's card with cream lace paper border embossed with flower and vase design. Applied to the central rectangular shaped panel a roundel divided into four areas to resemble a coat of arms. The areas are painted blue, red and gold and each has a symbolic paper image - a shovel, a soup bowl, a kettle and a clothes rail. In the centre is a gilded paper cradle. A gilded frame surrounding the roundel is marked 'Coming Events Cast their shadows before them'. Handwritten on the panel above the roundel is 'The Hymeneal Arms'. Below the roundel is a paper scrap marked 'The Single married and the married happy' and a garland of embossed and coloured paper flowers.
