Fish sign; Salmon sign
The gilded salmon sign previously hung outside the shop of Messrs Eaton and Deller, high quality fishing tackle suppliers and manufacturers located at 6 Crooked Lane from c1790 and Bury Street, St. James'. Joseph Eaton and his son George were citizen Fishmongers of London. Joseph died on 9 September 1821, aged 69 and is buried in Saint John, Waterloo Road. George ran the business from 1825. From 1836 the firm moved to 6 & 7 Crooked Lane and after George's death (will proved 26 March 1851 - PROB 11/2128/394), the firm became known as Eaton & Deller. There were several fishing-tackle manufacturers and retailers in Crooked Lane in the mid to late 19th century.
