Printed Ephemera — 1810-1838
Card, valentine card
Valentine's card comprising two sheets of identical lace paper by Dobbs with decoration, probably applied at a later date than the manufacture of the paper. The undersheet comprises a lace paper border and central paper panel handpainted with a wreath of flowers and foliage surrounding an applied photograph showing the head and shoulders of a middle aged male. The panel is also printed with a love motto 'Oh would that love had power to raise a little isle for us along with fairy flowers and sunny rays the blue sea wave it's guardian zone'. The top sheet has an identical lace paper border but a central panel of cream wateredsilk with crudely applied decoration including satin and paper flowers and leaves and paper cut out images of a bird, a tambouring, a basket and an embossed cupid.
