Plate
This earthenware plate of French origin has a transfer view in the centre of 'Hampton House' and the inscription 'MAISON DE CAMPAGNE DE GARRICK/Comté de Middlesex, Angleterre'.
Hampton House was the villa rented in January 1754 by eighteenth century actor David Garrick (1717-1779) and his wife, Eva Marie, née Veigel (1724-1882). They bought the house in October that year and used it as their summer country retreat. Their main residences were 27 Southampton Street (1749-1772) and 5 Adelphi Place (from 1772).
After Garrick's death in 1779 the house was left to Eva who lived there until she died in 1822 aged 97. After her death the villa was bought by Eva's solicitor, Thomas Carr, who changed the name to 'Garrick's Villa.'
