Printed Ephemera — 1862-1872
Mr Sawford as Black Ralph
Handcoloured theatrical souvenir plate engraved with a portrait of the actor Mr Sawford in the role of Black Ralph. The portrait has been cut from a sheet and stuck to cardboard with some handcoloured background scenery. The engraving has been embellished with metal foil tinsel ornaments on the dress accessories and gun. The clothing is of silk and cotton and velvet. Such sheets would have been sold plain as theatrical souvenirs for colouring and tinselling at home.
