Mr Kean as Othello
Uncoloured theatrical souvenir plate engraved with a portrait of the actor Mr Kean in the role of Othello. Such sheets would have been sold plain as theatrical souvenirs for colouring and tinselling at home.
Kean was known for his pertrayals of tragic Shakespearian characters. In 1833 Kean played Othello, with his son in the role of Iago. Kean continued to play Shakespeare's tragic roles until 1833, when he collapsed onstage during a performance of Othello.
