Printed Ephemera — 1828-1839
Master Burke as Norval
Uncoloured miniature, theatrical souvenir plate engraved with a portrait of the actor Master Burke in the role of Norval. Joseph Burke, popularly known as Master Burke, was a child prodigy who was first known for his acting. In later life he was a solo violinist and conducted orchestras.
Such sheets would have been sold as theatrical souvenirs for colouring and tinselling at home. This portrait may have been cut from a larger sheet printed with four similar engravings.
