Monsr Bihin as the Giant of Palestine
Uncoloured theatrical souvenir plate engraved with a portrait of the actor Monsr Bihin in the role of The Giant of Palestine. Such sheets would have been sold as theatrical souvenirs for colouring and tinselling at home. Published January 28th 1839.
Jean Bihin was born in Belgium. Bihin travelled around Europe working in fairs and circuses. Bihin performed at the Adelphi theatre throughout December 1838 and January 1839.
Critics praised his performance in 'the Giant of Palestine', commenting that Bihin 'acquitted himself in a very artistical manner; his positions were classical and admirably showed off his immense height'. London's theatres did not boast him for long. In 1840 Bihin joined Barnum's circus and moved to America.
