Printed Ephemera — 1837-1850
William the Conqueror at the Siege of Gerberoy Castle
Handcoloured print engraved with an equestrian portrait of the heroic character William the Conqueror on horseback at the Siege of Gerberoy Castle. The portrait is embellished with metal foil tinsel ornaments on the armour, spear, dress accessories, horse livery and horse blanket. The clothing is of cotton, fur and feather. The portrait, with some hand coloured background scenery, has been cut out and stuck on a piece of card. The portrait is part of a series of equestrian prints published by A.Park. Such portraits of heroic, allegorical and historical figures would have been sold plain for colouring and tinselling at home.
