Printed Ephemera — 1839
Mr Elsgood as Quicksand in the Silver Palace
Handcoloured theatrical souvenir sheet engraved with a portrait of the actor Mr Elsgood in the role of Quicksand in The Silver Palace. Marked 'No 118 published September 30th 1839.' such plates would have been sold as theatrical souvenirs.
The Silver Palace was a one-act play added to the end of the play The Cedar Chest. When it was performed at Sadler's Wells the theatre had a retractable stage above a water tank, filled by a river. The tank was used during The Silver Palace, which was a spectacular crowd-pleaser and boasted battles, music, water and fireworks.
