Mr G. Almar as Coral Crown the Water King
Uncoloured, engraved theatrical portrait plate of the actor and writer George Almar in the role of Coral Crown the Water King in the play the Cedar Chest. Printed and sold by A.Park and also sold by M & M Skelt, 11 Swan Street, Minories. Such sheets would have been sold as theatrical souvenirs to theatregoers.
Almar wrote The Cedar Chest in 1934, whilst running the Sadler's Wells theatre. The theatre was in decline after Grimaldi's retirement and Almar promoted melodramatic spectaculars to rebuild audiences. The Cedar Chest's final scene was set in an underwater cavern and included real fireworks and fountains.
