Printed Ephemera — 1840-1860
Tinsel ornament
Portraits of actors in character were popular theatrical souvenirs. Decorating portraits with tinsel ornaments purchased for the purpose was a popular past-time. These three tinsel wreaths would have been sold to decorate theatrical portraits. The largest of the three wreaths is 35 mm in diameter. They were pobably made by attaching tinsel foil to paper, then they were probably stamped with textured motifs and cut out, before being sold alongside prints with related shapes.
