Printed Ephemera — 1822-1839
Mr Blanchard as Hafed in the Fire Worshipers
Uncoloured theatrical souvenir portrait with engraving of the actor Mr Blanchard in the role of Hafed in the Fire Worshipers. With artist's signature 'Marks fecit' establishing JL Marks as both the artist and the publisher.
Blanchard would later become known for his portrayals of the comic character Pantaloon, but as a younger man performed a range of roles. Cartouche was the title character of a melodrama about a French highwayman, Louis Dominique Bourguignon. A melodrama was performed in London about the figure, probably adapted from Frédérick Lemaître's melodramatic 'Cartouche' in Paris.
