Paintings, Prints & Drawings — 1795-1802
Westminster from Lambeth
This painting is one of a pair by the artist, both of which are in the Museum's collection. For this painting J. W. Edge focused on the view of Westminster Abbey and Westminster Hall, as seen from Lambeth across the River Thames. Westminster Bridge stretches across the right of the composition and a rowing boat can be seen on the river in the centre. In the foreground a small yacht is moored on the left while, on the right, a long ferry boat with people on board is tied up under a tree. The painting's dates are taken from a handwritten note on the verso: "Painted by J.W. Edge - Exhibited in RA (1795-1802)". The companion painting depicts a view of St. Paul's Cathedral, seen from across the river.
