Prehistoric — Middle Iron Age; 500 - 400BCE
Dagger, sheath
A Middle Iron Age Iron dagger and wooden sheath dating 500 to 400 BCE. There are four indentations near the hilt guard. The sheath is made from wood bound with bronze strips, the dagger originally had a wooden grip decorated with bronze and iron fittings.
This iron dagger is of a type known in southern Germany and Austria, and must have been imported into Britain some time around the 6th century BCE. However, the bronze bands of the sheath, and the loops for hanging the dagger from the wearer's belt, are clearly the work of a British armourer. Six daggers of the same style have now been found, mostly in the London area.
