Social History — 19th century; c. 1820-1845
Measure, spouted measure
Spouted measure with the letter ‘C’ engraved on the thumbpiece and the body inscribed 'J Campken/ Blue Boar/ Aldersgate St'. This inscription was engraved over an earlier one which is just visible 'J (or T?) Daman B(ear?) & Staff T(ap?) St’. The earlier inscription also appears on the base. There are two City of London verification marks for GIV and VR struck near the rim to the left and right of the handle. The rubbed touch in the base ‘MIST […]/D[…]’ is that of William Mister, OP3237 who was free in August 1820. Mister seems to have worked at several addresses in the Borough, Southwark: 232 Kent Street; 49 Great Dover Street; and 43 Roebuck Place, Great Dover Street. Mister died in 1841 and his widow continued to run the business until 1845. Date: early 19th century.
