Printed Ephemera — 1856-1865
Tea paper, wrapping paper
Wood-engraved paper sheet used for wrapping small quantities of loose tea and coffee purchased from J Roberts and company's tea establishment located at 31 Barbican . The sheet is engraved with the name and address of the merchant and a circular engraving representing a scene from the Battle of Inkermann Entitled 'Crimean War puzzles ' the engraving was the first in a series produced by the tea merchant depicting battles and scenes from the Crimean War fought between 1853 and 1856. The Battle of Inkermann took place in 1854. As well as publicising the business marketing incentives such as the incorporation of puzzles and games in wrapping papers were employed by tea and coffee merchants to promote sales and encourage customer loyalty.
