Printed Ephemera — 1830-1860
Tea paper, wrapping paper
Wood-engraved paper sheet used for wrapping small quantities of loose tea purchased from the tea dealer and grocer W Dyer. located at 2 Church Street, Bethnal Green Road. The sheet includes the name and address of the tea merchant and a circular engraving depicting a scene from the fairy story Jack and the Beanstalk. The engraving entitled 'Jack the Giant Killer Puzzle', was one of a series of similar engravings that, when cut out and pasted together formed a puzzle telling the complete story of Jack and the Beanstalk. Customers purchasing tea from the merchant could, therefore, collect the whole series over a period of time. As well as publicising the business marketing incentives such as the incorporation of puzzles and games in wrapping papers were employed by tea and coffee merchants to promote sales and encourage customer loyalty.
