Social History — 19th or 20th century
Pap boat
Pap boats were used for feeding small children and invalids. Pap refers to baby food, a soft pulp made using bread and milk. This pap boat has been stamped with the initials 'FH' . It was made for the Foundling Hospital, a home for abandoned children located in the Bloomsbury area.
A crowned 'X' has also been stamped on the bowl. This mark originally indicated the quality of the pewter but by the time this pap boat was made it was being used indiscriminately. The touch mark of the maker 'Dent' can be seen below the crowned X. The date of manufacture has also been stamped on the handle.
