Sculpture, carved column
Fragment of a stone column with overlapping leaf imbricated decoration that resembles fish scales. There is no ribbing and the leaves are in very low relief. This is one of several fragments of column decorated in this way from the Museum of London's collection. A22643 was found on the same site, and A22699 mentions two fragments from the same site again that are very similar. It is possible at least one of these fragments was relabelled NN14665, or A22699 may be a group entry for A22642 and A22643. The objects are currently unlocated: a positive identification is difficult. At the most, there are 5 fragments of such a column; at least there are 2. Imbrication was a feature of decoration on Jupiter columns, especially on the German limes, but it is also seen on tomb bolsters and simply to ornament architectural features. The continental association suggests an early date for the carving, maybe first or second century A.D.
