The King's Head
This trade token, worth a farthing, was issued at the King's Head tavern, on Holborn Bridge, Middlesex.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 1401. Obv inscription: AT.YE.KINGS.HEAD (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = I, combined with a merchant's mark M.E. (in field, in Roman capitals); Rev inscription: ON.HOLBORNE.BRIDGE (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = Bust of king with crown and sceptre (in field).
Holborn Bridge lay 'at the east end of Holborn Hill and north end of Fleet Market over the Fleet, at its junction with the Holborn, when the streams flowed openly through the City' (see Henry A. Harben, A dictionary of London (London, 1918).
