Lambeth Palace - Gate House
Lambeth Palace, Gate House, 1883. This photograph was commissioned by the Society for Photographing Relics of Old London to form part of a permanent visual record of historic buildings threatened with alteration or possible demolition in the 1870s and 1880s. Lambeth Palace is the official London residence of the Archbishop of Canterbury and dates back to the 12th century. Much of the present palace was built in the 15th century and the Gate House, shown here, was built by John Cardinal Morton in 1495. It remains much the same today.
