Christ's Hospital
Christ's Hospital. 1879. This photograph was commissioned by the Society for Photographing Relics of Old London which wanted to create a permanent record of historic buildings threatened with demolition in the 1870s and 1880s. Christ's Hospital was founded in the mid 16th century for the relief and education of poor children and was built on the site of the old Grey Friars Monastery. The school relocated to Horsham in 1902 and the building in Newgate Street was demolished.
