Temple Bar
Temple Bar, Fleet Street, 1878. This photograph was commissioned by the Society for Photographing Relics of Old London to form part of a permanent visual record of historic buildings threatened with alteration or possible demolition in the 1870s and 1880s. It shows the west side of Temple Bar and was taken shortly before the structure was dismantled and removed to Theobald's Park in Hertfordshire where it was re-erected 10 years later. In 2004 the Temple Bar was returned to the City of London at a new site on the south side of the remodelled Paternoster Square, adjacent to St. Paul's Cathedral.
